Savannah River Remediation’s Lean Program Adds Value for Former Summer Intern

Aiken, S.C. - Savannah River Remediation (SRR) employee Daisy Carlos is paying forward her knowledge and experience gained through working at SRR.

Carlos, who grew up in Los Angeles, Calif., knew at a young age that she wanted to pursue a career in business. Upon moving to Augusta and graduating from high school, Carlos began to pursue her Bachelor of Business Administration in Management Information Systems at Augusta University, where she is currently a senior.

When she began work at SRR as a project management intern in May 2015, she couldn’t imagine the opportunities she would be afforded from her experience with SRR. When the internship ended, Carlos transitioned into SRR’s Lean Program as a co-op employee. She has been adding a creative approach to a process that uses continuous improvement that systematically seeks to accomplish incremental changes that improve efficiency and quality at SRR.

“I have had the opportunity to bring fresh eyes to Lean,” said Carlos. “When the workforce has been working under the same practices for extended periods of time, it can be difficult for them to see where they could be allocating time and resources, and I feel like as an outsider looking in, I am able to help them with that.”

SRR’s approach to training students to be tomorrow’s professionals is making their interns and co-op employees more marketable and competitive in the workplace. Soon Carlos will be leaving SRR to join a major company in Augusta. She was recruited for the position based on her academics at Augusta University and work experience with SRR.

“My mentors at SRR have boosted my confidence and knowledge in the project management and Lean fields, and I am looking forward to paying it forward in a different type of business,” Carlos said.

SRR is the liquid waste contactor at SRS for the U.S. Department of Energy. SRR is composed of a team of companies led by AECOM with partners Bechtel National, CH2M and BWX Technologies. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, EnergySolutions and URS Professional Solutions.
