Aiken, S.C. - Savannah River Remediation (SRR) Veteran Cooperative employee Harry Zane has always had a strong desire to pay it forward by serving his country, his employer, and his family.
Zane paid it forward to his nation by honorably serving in the U.S. Army for 25 years. During a tour of duty in Iraq in 2008, Harry was wounded and returned home. When he returned, Zane said he brought multiple challenges with him.
“When I returned from Iraq, I brought the challenges associated with war home with me,” Zane said. “But, SRR has helped me overcome these challenges and has enabled me to become a confident contributor in society.”
In 2014, SRR began employing qualified veterans pursuing a bachelor’s degree in part-time, paid developmental jobs in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, and non-STEM fields, relating to their degree of study. Zane is one of those veterans, and he has proudly served SRR as a Cyber Security Analyst since 2014 while also attending Augusta University pursuing a degree in Automated Information Systems and Technology.
Zane said SRR and his co-workers helped build his confidence in the workplace and in the classroom by enabling him to achieve certification through Augusta University as a Cyber Defender. Zane was voted Team Captain of the Cyber Defense Team called Cyber Jags and participated in the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition preliminary.
“Steve Lape, one of my SRR co-workers volunteered to be our IT Professional Room Judge for this event,” Zane said. “By allowing Steve to support this collegiate team, SRR showed its dedication toward the development and success of its employees.”
In December, Zane realized a dream as he walked across Augusta University’s graduation stage, earning his bachelor’s degree. After graduation, Zane’s internship at SRR drew to a close, and he now moves forward into the New Year with great hope and expectation.
“I have cast my net wide and have some great opportunities on the horizon,” Zane said.
One of those opportunities is pursuing a master’s degree.
"With the experience I have gained at SRR and the education I have obtained through Augusta University, I am now ready to pursue my master’s degree in Information Security Management,” Zane said.
Zane has enrolled in the spring semester at Augusta University and is excited to begin this new chapter in his life.
Zane said that he wants to pay it forward to his family by showing them that obstacles in life are meant to be overcome, and they do not have to limit you. He hopes his newly earned degree and the pursuit for a master’s degree will demonstrate this principle to his family, fellow veterans, students, and co-workers.
