SRR Receives Fifth URS President's Award for Safety

November 18, 2013

AIKEN, S.C. – The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) liquid waste contractor Savannah River Remediation (SRR), recently received its fifth consecutive URS President's Award for safe work performance.

SRR has received its parent-company's top safety award every time it has accumulated 2.5 million hours worked without a days-away injury or illness. SRR became the SRS liquid waste operations in July 2009. This is the Project's 5th President's Award.

In a letter from Bob Zaist, President of URS Energy and Construction, he praised the SRR team for preventing injuries at such a high level.

"It is with sincere pleasure that I acknowledge your project's qualification for the 'President's Award for Safety Excellence," Zaist wrote. "Please commend and congratulate the project superintendents and the other employees who have played an important role in this noteworthy achievement."

Accepting the award for SRR was Ken Rueter, SRR President and Project Manager, who said the team's achievement continues the SRR mantra of working safely.

"This achievement takes a lot of dedication towards adopting and maintaining a safe work culture, and our employees do just that," said Rueter. "Every day I see employees looking out for their co-worker's safety. That's why we are able to send employees home the same way they came to work."

Patricia Allen, SRR Environment, Health, Safety and Quality Assurance Manager, joined Rueter and John Gall, Savannah River Site Environment, Safety and Health Manager, in accepting the award at a recent ceremony.

"This award is for our employees and speaks to how their everyday actions are recognized at a high level," said Allen. "I'm proud to know I'm a member of a safe team."

SRS is owned by DOE. The SRS Liquid Waste contract is managed by SRR, a team of companies led by URS Corp. with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions and URS Professional Solutions.
