SRR Receives Sixth URS President's Award for Safety

AIKEN, S.C. – The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) liquid waste contractor, Savannah River Remediation (SRR), recently received its sixth URS President's Award for safe work performance.

SRR has received its parent-company's top safety award every time it has accumulated 1.5 million hours worked without a days-away injury or illness. SRR began Savannah River Site (SRS) liquid waste operations in July 2009.

In a letter from George Nash, President of URS Energy and Construction Division, he praised the SRR team for preventing injuries at such a high level.

"It is with sincere pleasure that I acknowledge your project's qualification for the 'President's Award for Safety Excellence'," Nash wrote. "Please commend and congratulate the project superintendents and the other employees who have played an important role in this noteworthy achievement."

Accepting the award for SRR was Neil Davis, SRR Tank Farm and Effluent Treatment Plant Director, and Chuck Sanders, SRR Tank Farm Field Safety and Health Manager.

Ken Rueter, SRR President and Project Manager, congratulated Davis and Sanders and recognized the dedication to safety of all SRR employees.

"This achievement takes a lot of dedication towards adopting and maintaining a safe work culture, and our employees do just that," said Rueter. "Every day I see employees looking out for their co-worker's safety. That's why we are able to send employees home the same way they came to work."

Patricia Allen, SRR Environment, Health, Safety and Quality Assurance Manager, joined Rueter in recognizing the SRR team.

"This award is for our employees and speaks to how their everyday actions are recognized at a high level," said Allen. "I'm proud to know I'm a member of a safe team."

SRS, located near Aiken, S.C., is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. The SRS Liquid Waste contract is managed by Savannah River Remediation, a team of companies led by URS Corporation, with partners Bechtel National, CH2M HILL and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions and URS Professional Solutions.
