Savannah River Remediation Public Affairs Group Reaches out to Senior Citizens

Aiken, SC - Bingo, lima beans and Meals on Wheels: These things typically are not involved in a Savannah River Remediation (SRR) Public Affairs day. But June 23, 2014, was a different story.

SRR Public Affairs staff members Dean Campbell, Rick Kelley, Tina Melton and Maddie Blair, along with their summer college intern, Colleen Welch, spent a day volunteering at the Roland Smith Senior Center in Jackson, S.C. The center is one of the congregate meal sites of the Aiken Area Council on Aging.

The Public Affairs employees hosted several rounds of bingo and assisted with serving lunch to the clients of the senior center. The SRR employees also spent time engaging the clients in one-on-one conversations about the past, current events, their family and their hopes for the future.

"It was a treat to be able to talk with the clients," said Dean Campbell, who organized the outing. "A lot of them had some kind of connection to the Savannah River Site. Some of them were residents of the displaced towns before the Site was built. We loved hearing their stories."

One team member saw what goes on behind the scenes of the Meals on Wheels program by assisting in delivering hot meals to 21 homes in the surrounding area.

Janie Sims is the coordinator of the Jackson congregate meal location.

"She is just an awesome individual, and she shows clients how to feel younger," Campbell said. "The Aiken Area Council on Aging works hard to operate this meal center and what they do is necessary and important."

SRR is the Liquid Waste contractor at Savannah River Site, which is owned by U.S. Department of Energy. SRR is a team of companies led by URS Corp. with partners Bechtel National, CH2M HILL and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions and URS Professional Solutions.
