SRR Reaches 5 Million Hours without Lost Work Day

June 11, 2014

AIKEN, S.C. - Savannah River Remediation (SRR), the liquid waste contractor at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS), has surpassed five million hours of work without a lost work day. SRR employees achieved the milestone on June 3, 2014. The company's last lost work day case occurred on March 25, 2013.

Patricia Allen, SRR Environmental, Safety, Health & QA, & CA Director, praised employees' commitment to safety and for reaching the milestone.

"For our employees to reach this milestone is outstanding. This achievement shows SRR employees continue to focus on our Nuclear Safety Culture tools, including understanding our Situational Awareness (SAWS) and using Human Performance Improvement (HPI) lessons," Allen said. "They care about their safety and the safety of their co-workers."

Ken Rueter, SRR President and Project Manager, said SRR employees continue to perform work safely while accomplishing significant operational milestones.

"We have seen SRR employees complete such tasks as operationally closing massive radioactive waste tanks without a safety injury and incident," Rueter said. "Achieving this milestone is not a surprise."

SRR has a long record of safety at SRS. The liquid waste construction group recently achieved a record of more than 26 million work hours without a lost work day injury. Plus, SRR recently received its parent company's (URS) top safety award for the sixth time. SRR began SRS liquid waste operations in July 2009.

SRS is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. SRR is composed of a team of companies led by URS Corp. with partners Bechtel National, CH2M HILL and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions and URS Professional Solutions.
