SRR has completed intrusive construction tie-ins on the Salt Solution Receipt Tanks (SSRTs). Once placed into operational service, the SSRTs will receive Decontaminated Salt Solution (DSS) from legacy waste tanks at the SRS. The DSS is then turned into a grout mixture and permanently disposed of in the Saltstone Disposal Facility (SDF) Saltstone Disposal Units (SDUs). Savannah River Remediation Completes Construction Turnover of Salt Solution Receipt Tanks

AIKEN, S.C. - Savannah River Remediation (SRR), the liquid waste contractor at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS), has completed intrusive construction tie-ins on the Salt Solution Receipt Tanks (SSRTs). The project, upon being placed into operational service later this year, will improve SRR's salt disposition process and prepare the Site's liquid waste program for the Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF), which is currently under construction.


SRR Construction finished all process piping tie-ins from the SSRTs to the existing Saltstone Production Facility (SPF), positioning the facility for future operations and interactions with SWPF.


Once placed into operational service, the SSRTs will receive Decontaminated Salt Solution (DSS) from H-Tank Farm. The DSS is then turned into a grout mixture and permanently disposed of in the Saltstone Disposal Facility (SDF) Saltstone Disposal Units (SDUs).


Completion of the project prepares SPF for increased throughputs of DSS once SWPF is completed. Once SWPF begins operation, throughputs to SPF will increase from the current one to 1.5 million gallons of DSS per year, to greater than six million gallons per year.


"The team did a great job completing construction tie-ins on this project," said Keith Harp, SWPF Project Integration Project Director. "The SSRTs at SPF will be a vital part of the success of SRS's liquid waste mission and enhances the safety of the overall liquid waste program."


According to Stuart MacVean, SRR President and Project Manager, completion on construction tie-ins puts SRR another step closer toward preparing for the start of SWPF.


"Not only do the SSRTs help prepare us for future SWPF operations, they also improve our current salt processing program within the Liquid Waste facilities," MacVean said.


The SSRTs, which have up to 120,000 gallons of receipt space capability, will aid the Modular Caustic Side Solvent Extraction Unit (MCU) as it works to increase its production rates until SWPF becomes operational.


Similar to the SWPF, the MCU processes high-activity salt solution and divides it into two waste streams. One of those streams, the DSS, is transferred to SPF where it is currently received into a small 4,000 gallon vessel. Having 120,000 gallons of receipt space at SPF will provide enormous flexibility to the LW system.


Following completion of software modifications and start-up testing, the SSRTs are set to be operational later this year.


The Savannah River Site, located near Aiken, S.C., is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. The SRS Liquid Waste contract is managed by Savannah River Remediation, a team of companies led by AECOM, with partners Bechtel National, CH2M HILL and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, EnergySolutions and Professional Solutions.
