AIKEN, S.C. – A Savannah River Remediation (SRR) safety team won an Award of Excellence from parent company's URS 2013 Pyramid Awards program for the development and implementation of the unique Slip Simulator mobile classroom.
The winning team, consisting of Patricia Allen, Kevin Smith, Dean Hayden, Donletta Watts and Roger Staten, received an Award of Excellence for Safety in the Energy and Construction, Global Management and Operations Services Division. Stuart MacVean, Interim SRR President and Project Manager, said this award is well deserved.
"I'm proud SRR has been recognized, once again, in the area of safety," said MacVean. "SRR employees continue to demonstrate safe performance, which is why we continue to see special recognition for safety."
The first-of-a-kind Slip Simulator, developed by SRR parent company URS, was conceptualized and launched by the safety team members as a mobile classroom to teach individuals how to safely navigate slippery surfaces. The simulator is a turn-key learning laboratory equipped with a slippery walkway, shoe covers that have been awarded a U.S. Patent, trolley system, training materials, large mirror and a flat screen monitor for instant feedback to trainees. It enables employees to utilize the slip prevention techniques they have learned previously in a safe, controlled environment.
Slips, trips and falls are a leading cause of injuries in the workplace, and over 400 SRR employees have been trained utilizing the simulator. Patricia Allen, SRR Environment, Health, Safety and Quality Assurance Manager, said this award acts as additional motivation for our workforce, from a safety performance standpoint.
"For the safety team, and all SRR employees alike, this achievement tells us we are doing the right things when it comes to safety," said Allen. "The Slip Simulator and MoveSMART® Balance training will help us reduce workplace slips, trips and falls significantly."
The URS Pyramid Awards program recognizes employees who demonstrate URS' commitment to achieving the highest standards of professional excellence, safety and service for customers, coworkers and the communities in which they work.
Approximately 2,100 URS employees were nominated for the Pyramid Awards, and 489 employees, representing nearly 108 project teams from across URS, were selected to receive the first tier Awards of Excellence in the 2013 Pyramid Awards program.
The Pyramid Awards are designated in a tiered system. The SRR safety team will now compete in the second tier of the Pyramid Awards program, the President's Awards. The winners will be named in August.
SRR is the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site, which is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. SRR is comprised of a team of companies led by URS Corp. with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill and Babcock & Wilcox.
